Apology from Al Barr

Al Barr apologised for his comment. And I think that’s very kind of him. So..to all those people who felt offended yesterday… there’s no need to be pissed anymore. Sláinte!

hey everybody -

al barr here - i just wanted to address the negative comment that i made. first off, i’d like to apologize for using the term that i did. by no means did i intend for it to cause any hurt or harm, i now fully realize how insensitive it was.

having grown up within a very diverse punk scene, i have many gay friends. i would never want to hurt anyone’s feelings with my comments.

i did not mean anything by this and now understand it is a word that i should not have used and will not use in the future. please accept my sincere apologies.

my band and i are any anything but homophobic and our 16 year track record proves that we stand up for human rights and fight against injustices towards all people.

thanks for your time and support, and again, please accept my sincere apologies. “

I have been away from the computer for an hour and it seems to have blown up with something Al has said. I seem to only be able to see peoples reaction to it, not what happened. I'm just curious to know what was said.

Well, there was this video (I think it has been deleted) about a show or a festival or something. Anyway, at the end of the video Al said

“…so don’t be a faggot. Go there, motherfuckers!” and it offended some people.

However, Al already apologised on facebook:

all though the word should not have been used we are putting way to much meaning behind it every one wants to cry foul here and lets all act like we've never said the word. We put to much power behind these words and get offended for no damn reason. And besides how can it be a giant insult to the gay community when there was no context attacking the gay community. everyone shut the hell up i bet half of you are straight any way and want to cause something out of nothing

Yep. I have to agree with you! He didn’t insult anyone for being gay.

Al Barr called me a motherfucker….

straycatboy:

this is a disgrace to all motherfuckers and mother-fucking around the world, we seriously need to do something about this… there will be a DMK burning at my house around 8

I'm very gay and I really think it's stupid how much power people give words. Judge someone by there deeds not words. I'm a huge DKM fan and that will never change!

Exactly! Nothing more to add! Dropkick Murphys all the way!

Personally i dont see what any of the fuss is about, fact is people use that word, and many words like it, its just they way things are and i highly doubt it will change soon. I myself and many people i know have used the word but i can tell you out of a lot of the people i know, myself and the others who i have heard use the word are the ones who are in support of gay rights and gladly accept them because we know there is nothing bad about it.

I understand your point and I am not going to lie: I also used words like those. Especially when I didn’t think enough. But that doesn’t make me a homophobic person (so that doesn’t make Al Barr homophobic either).

As well as you, I support gay rights and I am pro gay marriage.

While I agree that Al probably didn't mean anything offensive by the use of the word "faggot" I don't think we as a community can simply turn a blind eye to it. It's still a very offensive word that's used to dehumanize the gay community, and his use of the word wasn't appropriate at all. I'm not going to stop listening to DKM, but I think he should apologize. Not that he'll somehow get the message from my comment on a fan blog, but that's my 2 cents.

I absolutely have to agree with you! As I said before, I think he should have choosen a better language.

If anyone stops listening to DKM now I couldn’t understand it at all, because you can’t just judge a whole band for a mistake a single bandmember made.

Anyway…Yeah…It would be necessary for him to apologise and to clear things up, but I also think it’s very rude, if people post the video and tag it with “asshole”.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not homophobic or racist at all! As soon as someone is homophobic or something I get really angry, because that is just not acceptable.

Cue all the punk bros crying that Al Barr using a homophobic slur isn’t actually homophobic and that everyone else should just get over it.
Oh no some one from a punk band said a rude word…what a faggot!

Seriously? Thats worth kicking up storm about? Not really mate

I don’t get the drama about that.

He didn’t say anything about gay people, he didn’t insult anyone, he didn’t lose a word about gay people, gay right, gay marriage. In my opinion he’s not homophobic, but yeah.

And I love the title… “Some one from a punk band said a rude word” :D
